The Softer Side of Porn, pt 2

If the LightSpeed girls evoke American Graffiti and necking in the drive-in theatre, then PornStarClassics.com, the latest site from Smash Bucks, recalls the sequined Seventies and the excess-enamored Eighties.

Though it's a marketing axiom that things which have fallen out of fashion will come into fashion again, the revival of Classic Porn is much more than nostalgic.

Hollywood's most notable depictions of the Golden Age of Porn, Boogie Nights and Wonderland, describe ruined lives, moral degradation, and offer a distinctly cautionary commentary on the business of pornography. But Hollywood's somber spin notwithstanding, the legacy of those two decades in porn -- namely, the porn itself -- is enjoying not only renewed popularity, but an apparent parole from the exile of "obscenity".

It is as if the passage of time has conferred upon this older porn the legitimacy of historical record. It's still every bit as explicit as most of what's being produced today, but the designation "classic" seems to soften the censor's heart.
